MINOTAUR
For This months challenge I am sculpting a Minotaur! I love this creature, as I have always been fascinated in Greek mythology. When I think about my sculpt I think about it in story form; what story do I want to tell with my figure?
In Greek mythology, the Minotaur (/ˈmaɪnətɔː/,[1] /ˈmɪnəˌtɔr/;[2] Ancient Greek: Μῑνώταυρος [miːnɔ̌ːtau̯ros], Latin: Minotaurus,Etruscan Θevrumineś), was a creature with the head of a bull on the body of a man[3] or, as described by Roman poet Ovid, "part man and part bull".[4] He dwelt at the center of the Labyrinth, which was an elaborate maze-like construction[5] designed by the architect Daedalus and his son Icarus, on the command of King Minos of Crete. The Minotaur was eventually killed by the Athenian hero Theseus.
But since the minotaur is only part of my challenge I imagine Daedalus or Icarus (i'm leaning towards Icarus) made the minotaur from bronze and and gave it the life of an angry and jealous spirit. I also imagine that altho its full of rage, its also has more in common with an actual bull then a man. I'm forgoing the weapons and clothing and focusing on his form and real weapons...his horns. below is my initial sketch
sketch done in cx5s. and yes, thats his tail.. |
