I am officially giving Nate a golf clap for April's challenge.
Well played Natey cakes, well played. This was truly a challenge that taxed all
my skill and patience and laid bare my weaknesses. I must admit that at the
first of the month I was confident in my ability to produce a near perfect
likeness to my bro-ness but now that the month is over I want to throw this
bust in the trash and call it a….bust… Having said that, I believe that we don't
learn by winning but by losing.
Here is the picture of my Bro that I was going for
Here is the clay over the foam and plaster form I did for the video
Adding more clay
My Final!
What did I do right…NOTHING…? (That’s not true) the first
thing I did right was to try. You can't win if you don’t try, right sir? The second
thing I did right was the foam form I used under the bust. Never try to make a
clay bust without something like that under the clay. It would be too heavy and
would take a tremendous amount of clay. And if the challenge was to make a bust
of any fictional person, I did a great job.
What did I do wrong? This does not look like Nate at all. As
it turns out I'm not great at upping the scale of my sculpting and I have a lot
to learn and practice. This will not be my last bust Attempt as it hasn’t yet
beat me, it does that when I quit. So…
What will I do next time? Next time I will actually print
out my target pictures. Both front and side profiles. I will blow up said
pictures to the scale I need. I will use calipers, a measuring device used in
design, sculpting, and carving. I think I could have planned better and
actually make a plan. Mabey do miniatures I can play with while I'm out and
about. Also I can't have as much help...
Also let's do a shout out to Karen Burgess for her bust of Nate's dog Eugene
GREAT JOB KAREN!
